Prompt, precise TB testing with no second visit required
Tuberculosis remains one of the most common infectious diseases in the world, and TB testing is a routine requirement for healthcare workers, teachers, students, childcare staff, and many others in the El Paso region. Because El Paso sits on the U.S.-Mexico border, TB screening is taken seriously here, and for good reason. Proximity to high-prevalence regions means exposure risk is a genuine consideration, not a formality.
At Immunize El Paso, we are proud to be one of the few in the area offering QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT) blood testing. This is the modern, clinically preferred alternative to the traditional TB skin test. In one visit, we’ll conduct a simple blood draw and have your results within 24 hours. If you or your employer, school, or licensing board needs TB testing, we make it simple and straightforward.
What Is Tuberculosis?
Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It spreads through the air when a person with active TB disease coughs, speaks, or sneezes, releasing bacteria that others can inhale. TB most commonly affects the lungs, but can also affect the kidneys, spine, and brain.
It is important to understand the distinction between two TB conditions:
Latent TB Infection (LTBI)
In latent TB, the bacteria are present in the body but dormant. The immune system has contained the infection, and the person has no symptoms, is not contagious, and may never develop active disease. However, without treatment, latent TB can reactivate — particularly in people whose immune systems become compromised. Most people who test positive for TB have latent infection, not active disease.
Active TB Disease
Active TB means the bacteria are multiplying and causing symptoms. Active TB is contagious and requires prompt medical treatment. Symptoms can include a persistent cough lasting three or more weeks, chest pain, coughing up blood, fatigue, fever, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss. If you are experiencing these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. Do not wait for a scheduled screening.
TB testing screens for infection, not just active disease. This is why it is valuable as a routine screening tool, even in people who feel completely healthy.
QuantiFERON-TB Gold Testing: What It Is and How It Works
The QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT) test is a blood test that detects your immune system’s response to the proteins produced by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. When a blood sample from an infected person is exposed to TB antigens in the lab, the immune cells release a measurable protein called interferon-gamma. The test measures that response to determine whether TB infection is present.
The older TB skin test (Mantoux TST) requires two separate visits — one to administer the injection and another 48 to 72 hours later to have a clinician measure the reaction on your arm. Results can be affected by prior BCG vaccination, which is standard in many countries outside the United States, frequently producing false positives in people who have never actually been infected with TB. The QFT blood test eliminates both problems entirely.

Why Choose Immunize El Paso for TB Testing?
We have been providing community health services in the Borderland since the early 1990s. Our staff understands the specific health landscape of the El Paso region, and that includes the elevated importance of TB awareness in a border community. We keep that context in mind during every patient interaction.
The QuantiFERON-TB Gold test that we use is endorsed by the CDC and preferred by a growing number of healthcare employers, schools, and licensing boards, especially for patients with a history of BCG vaccination. When you test here, you’re getting the test that is increasingly becoming the required gold standard in the field.
Frequently Asked Questions
If I test positive, does that mean I have TB disease?
Not necessarily. Most people who test positive have latent TB infection, meaning the bacteria are present but dormant. These individuals are neither sick nor contagious. A positive result does mean you should follow up with a physician for further evaluation, including a chest X-ray and clinical assessment, to determine whether treatment is warranted.
Can I spread TB to others if my test is positive?
Latent TB is not contagious. Only people with active TB disease, who have symptoms and bacteria actively multiplying in their lungs, can spread the infection to others. A positive screening test alone does not mean you are contagious.
I was vaccinated with BCG as a child. Will that affect my results?
Not with the QFT blood test. BCG vaccination is known to cause false positive results on the traditional skin test, but it does not affect QuantiFERON-TB Gold results. This is one of the key reasons QFT is the preferred option for foreign-born individuals and international travelers.
How long are TB test results valid?
This varies by employer, school, or licensing body. Many healthcare employers require annual or biannual testing. Some schools accept a result from within the past year. Check with the organization requesting your test for their specific requirements.
Do I need a doctor’s order to get tested?
No. You can walk in or schedule directly with us, and no physician referral or order is required. We will provide documentation of your results that most employers and schools will accept directly.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring a valid photo ID. If your employer or school has provided specific paperwork or forms for the result, bring those as well, and we will complete them for you.
What if my result is indeterminate?
An indeterminate result means the test did not produce a clear positive or negative. This is uncommon but can happen due to certain immune conditions or sample issues. We will advise you on retesting and help you understand your options.
